Texel

The Texel originated on the Isle of Texel off the coast of The Netherlands early in the nineteenth century. Lincoln and Leicester Longwool sheep were crossed with these originals thus allowing the characteristics of the breed to be established early on. The emphasis was on a sheep that would produce heavily muscled lambs of superior eating quality without any excess fat, to these ends every effort was made to produce a sheep with a low propensity for fat deposit and an emphasis on lamb meat production. The Texel's remarkable muscle development and leaness has not been lost on the Europeans where the Texel has become the dominant terminal sire breed.
