Canadian Arcotts

Canadian Arcotts were developed by the Canadian Government in the 1970's as a terminal sire breed. The three main breeds were Ile de France, Suffolk and Leicester.

They are large, well muscled sheep with better than average wool quality. The face and legs are somewhat variable in color, but are generally white or tan. There is usually a small amount of wool on top of the forehead, the ears are large and held horizontally.

Growth rate and carcass quality are excellent, with superior muscling and finish. Hardiness is a key trait with very active lambs at birth, demonstrating high survivability. Adult sheep maintain body condition under most conditions, including extensive and poorer quality pasture.

MRFA 530L was an outstanding lamb from the start. He and his twin sister were born outside, unassisted and grew very rapidly due to the excellent mothering and milking ability of their dam. After weaning at approx. 40 days, he continued to demonstrate extreme growth and was actually 65kgs (143lbs) at 106 days. His estimated adult weight is over 160kgs (350lbs). Physically he is correct, with excellent feet, legs, teeth and general conformation. As with most Canadians, the muscling and length in the loin is noteworthy. His hindquarters (gigots) are very well developed.
